The Importance Of Proper Vehicle Maintenance

The Importance Of Proper Vehicle Maintenance

by George Archer

In this day and age, your car is just as valuable as a horse was back in the 1800's. Keeping your transportation well maintained is extremely important, but there are still a large number of people who are unsure about exactly what steps they need to take to make sure their vehicle stays in tip top shape. There are a few basic things that you can do to ensure this, however.

Change your oil on the schedule that your service provider recommends. This is typically every 3,000 miles, but going until around 4,000 miles will not severely impact the performance of your vehicle. It is best, however, to have it changed every 3,000 miles if at all possible. Whoever you get to change your oil will typically place a sticker on your windshield that lets you know when you need to come back and have it changed again. Make use of it.

Whatever you do, though, don't forget your tires. Having good quality tires that are all the same size and are inflated properly is extremely important to prevent car accidents. Over-inflated tires can cause the tire to wear out much faster in the center than on the outside, but under-inflated tires can cause blowouts. In vehicles that are high off the ground, such as SUVs, can roll over as a result of a tire blowout. Keep your own tire gauge in your vehicle so you can test it when airing your tires up, because the gauges on air pumps at gas stations are often inaccurate at best.

Your battery is the next most important thing that you need to make sure and take care of. If you buy a used vehicle, you should replace the battery first thing, because you don't know its history. Too many people have purchased used vehicles that work fine the first week and then start having problems afterward, whether it's due to tires or bad batteries. Keep a pair of jumper cables in your trunk, whether you have a new battery or not. Driving your vehicle often is important to keep the battery charged, so driving a vehicle that is in storage is important to guard against having a dead battery.

Transmission and power steering fluid is also something that you need to watch out for. Transmissions are expensive to have replaced no matter what type of vehicle you have, while power steering fluid is necessary if you have power steering. If the power steering fails while you're driving, it could cause you to have an accident.
